Measles deaths across the world fell by 60 percent from 1999 to 2005, a major public health success published in the January 19, 2007 edition of The Lancet health journal. This historic victory for global public health was announced by partners in the Measles Initiative: the American Red Cross, the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the United Nations Foundation, UNICEF and the World Helath Organization (WHO). In Africa, the progress has been even greater, with measles deaths falling by 75 percent.
